Our Curriculum
At Del Mar Academy, the concept of educating the whole child is central to everything we do. We follow the principles and philosophy of Maria Montessori in the early childhood curriculum, as well as other progressive educators and innovative 21st century learning methods in the older grades.
We believe that a strong Montessori foundation at the primary level is essential to the future development of a child. We believe that a Lower Elementary Montessori education, coupled with other renowned teaching practices, serves the individual learning needs and modalities of each child. We believe in extending Montessori’s core principles into the Lower and Upper Elementary education level, while placing a larger emphasis on traditional and progressive techniques that will ensure a smoother transition into the future International Baccalaureate program.
Our curriculum is interdisciplinary, sequential, individualized, contextual, meaningful and holistic, and will provide students with the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways and explore multiple intelligences. Our teachers are enthusiastic and dedicated educators who are committed to meeting the needs of each child in their class.
Teachers work individually and in small groups with children to foster and encourage their happiness and to experience new learning opportunities. Careful observation of each child leads to valuable insight about learning needs and styles, which are incorporated in classroom work. Our professional staff offers the sensitivity, nurturing and patience essential to children of these ages.
The primary goal of the teacher is to serve as a link between the classroom environment/materials and the child. The teacher observes, reflects, and guides the child along a path to reach his/her fullest potential and independence. We aim to balance spirit, mind and body in the healthy and whole child.
